PLEASE NOTE: SOME CLASSES ARE HELD ONLINE USING ZOOM. SOME CLASSES ARE IN-STUDIO AS WELL AS BY ZOOM (HYBRID).

Fall Session #2 runs for 7 weeks between Oct 27 – Dec 19, 2021 and is open for registration.

We will need to have a minimum number of students enrolled in a class series in order for it to continue beyond the first meeting. If minimum enrollment for the series has not been met before the second class, the class will be removed from the schedule.

Due to Covid space restrictions, single class purchases will not be allowed the first week for in-person classes that usually fill to capacity. This prioritizes registration to students who wish to attend the entire series. Drop-in purchases will be allowed after week #1, if space allows. Thank you for your understanding as we tweak policies in order to maintain financial sustainability during these challenging times.

Make-ups may be taken during the 7-week session but may not be carried over to the next session.

AfroCaribbean

This class will explore the different dances from the African Diaspora in the Caribbean Islands and their modern forms such as Soca, Afro-Beats, Dembow, Reggae, Reggaetón, Bomba, etc. Exploring Katherine Dunham, an early modern dancer who has been called “the queen of black dance.” Bringing together African, Caribbean ritual, social dance and concert dance, this class focuses on developing strength, stamina, flexibility, quick feet movements and the ability to fully and rapidly undulate the torso. The class creates a dance community that nurtures, heals, renews, and inspires body and spirit.

Studying ballet is one of the most effective and elegant ways of improving posture, grace, flexibility, and strength. It is considered to be an excellent foundation for many other forms of dance. Ballet Awareness

In this class, students will gain a deeper insight into the technical foundations of ballet and discover how to move through the classical form with special attention to initiation, articulation and alignment. Class begins with breathing and body awareness exercises, and progresses to simple barre and center exercises done slowly and mindfully. For beginners and experienced dancers alike.

Contemporary

Based in ballet and modern dance, this contemporary class will teach choreography and phrases, often using emotion or music to motivate the movement. Jazz Funk

This class uses a blend of dance styles in fun and funky choreography set to upbeat pop music. We do a thorough warmup utilizing traditional jazz and modern technique. Modern Jazz

This soulful modern jazz dance class is based in the technique of legendary jazz dance teacher, Luigi. After a grounding warm-up, students will be challenged from the outside in and trained in both the expression and execution of movement. Set to eclectic, atmospheric and heart-thumping music, this modern jazz class will equip you with ballet foundations as well as with modern and jazz dance vocabulary and will keep you engaged, sweaty, and inspired. Everybody has rhythm. This class will help you find it and express it! We’ll work on tap dance fundamentals and apply them to choreography and improvisation to different types of music. This class is a fusion of barre fitness and Balletone®, combining ballet-inspired moves with elements of Pilates, dance, and yoga. Full Body Fitness-NEW!

This class will be full of upbeat dance music and fun. We will start with ten minutes of cardio dance routines, followed by a full-body toning experience utilizing the barre and mats. We will finish the class with a mind and body centering stretch session, cultivating gratitude and joy. Sneakers and/or supportive dance shoes are not required but are recommended.

House Workout

House Workout is a 60-minute blend of footwork, floor work, and underground dance styles geared to keep your body grooving to the sounds of house, disco, and breakbeat rhythms. This class mixes calisthenics with basic experimental floor movements to build your cardio and strengthen your core muscles (arms, abs, and quads). Sweat it out in this beginner friendly class using basic house fundamentals and hip-hop movements in repetition. There will be no set choreography for this class as we emulate the underground dance culture, creating improvised and stylized combinations towards the end of the hour. Sneakers, water, and hand towels highly recommended.

The Pilates Method has become a favorite of dancers and others for its effectiveness in promoting flexibility and long, lean muscles. (Coming Out Of) Quarantine Fitness

This fitness class will bring a healing vitality to your daily routine at home. SharQui: Belly Dance Fitness

Get ready to shimmy and sweat in this new Bellydance Fitness Class! In each class, you’ll learn easy-to-follow belly dance combinations using a dynamic teaching system known as SharQui (pronounced Shar-‘Key), developed by world famous bellydancer, Oreet. You will learn the ancient, beautiful art of belly dance with a focus on constant movement and calorie-burning fun! Self-Care for Stressed Bodies – Free for BIPOC and anyone unable to pay

In these unsettling times, we can all benefit from some extra self-care. This donation-based class will center around mental and physical wellness and is designed for anyone who wants to increase, develop or add to their wellness toolbox. Exercises include breath work, meditative techniques, and body work such as targeted muscle stretches and exercises to release pain and tension as well as improving body, mind, and spirits. This class is for all stressed bodies. For all walks of life. Movers and non-movers alike.

Strengthen, Stretch and Relax

This class is especially designed to help you feel grounded, strong, and calm. Come as you are: tired, overwhelmed, anxious, stiff/sore, whatever! At the beginning of class we will check in so that we can address any “sticky places” that might want special attention.  Using elements of yoga, dance, and mindfulness meditation you will leave feeling more resilient and at ease in your mind and body. It’s a great way to “let go of the day” and prepare for restful sleep. Feel free to join in your jammies!

This class welcomes all, regardless of age, physical ability, movement experience, fitness “level”, etc.

Outdoor Yoga for EveryBody

This class is for anyone looking to feel more grounded, strong, and easeful in their minds and bodies. Through traditional yoga asana (poses) and pranayama (breathing), we’ll build deep core and full-body strength, mobility especially in the hips and shoulders, and greater ability to remain present and resilient in the face of life’s challenges. Open to anyone with a desire to learn. Modifications will be offered for injuries/chronic pain, prenatal/postpartum, mobility differences, and brand-new beginners, in addition to experienced yogis looking for a greater physical/mental challenge.

Masks required for anyone unvaccinated. Please bring a yoga mat.

Class will be held outside at a private home in central Durham; address will be sent to you shortly before the first class.
