Dunham Technique

Open Level!

DUNHAM TECHNIQUE was developed by internationally renowned dancer / choreographer KATHERINE DUNHAM through her profound anthropological explorations in Africa and the Caribbean. This codified modern technique is rooted in the movements and rhythms originating in Africa and the Caribbean, blending elements of Classical Ballet with traditional African and Caribbean dance forms. The techniques vocabulary emphasizes isolating individual parts of the body, laying the groundwork for executing poly-rhythmic movement reminiscent of African dance and music. Distinctive movements involve spinal undulations, motions originating from the pelvic girdle, leg swings, fall and recovery, body isolations moving independently and simultaneously. Classes provide a diverse range of experiences encompassing history, theory, pedagogy, barre and floor work, progressions, Dunham based Haitian, West African, Jazz, and more! Dunham Technique does not require previous dance experience, making it ideal for beginning and experienced dancers alike seeking an introduction to Dunham Technique.

The Fine Print

We need to have a minimum number of students enrolled in any particular class in order for it to continue beyond the first meeting. If minimum enrollment in the full series has not been met before the second class, the class will be removed from the schedule.

Due to space restrictions, single class purchases will not be allowed the first week for in-person classes that usually fill to capacity. This prioritizes registration to students who wish to attend the entire series. Drop-in purchases will be allowed after week #1, if space allows. Thank you for your kind understanding as we tweak our policies in order to support our financial sustainability during these challenging times.

For attire, please see our FAQ on the About page.

Make-ups for missed classes may be taken during the same session but may not be carried over to the next session.
