This class will dig into this early jazz movement and the people who created it. Lindy Hop

Lindy hop is the original swing dance, created in the ballrooms of Harlem and spread across the world over the 1930s and 40s. Combining African rhythms with partner dancing, black teenagers created the signature dance form of swing jazz that is still danced today. Lindy Hop is built around two foundational rhythms: 6-count and 8-count. In the first six week session, we’ll focus on 6-count patterns like drifting, send outs, pass bys, sugar pushes, and tuck turns. 6-count rhythms are playful, compact, and great for experimenting with turns, musicality, and styling. In the second session, we’ll transition into 8-count movements such as lindy circles, swing outs, and promenades. 8-count rhythms travel more across the floor and give the dance its classic energetic, athletic feel. Throughout both sections, we’ll practice partner dancing with an emphasis on comfort, connection, and fun. This class is welcoming to complete beginners and no partner is required.

The Fine Print

We need to have a minimum number of students enrolled in any particular class in order for it to continue beyond the first meeting. If minimum enrollment in the full series has not been met before the second class, the class will be removed from the schedule.

Due to space restrictions, single class purchases will not be allowed the first week for in-person classes that usually fill to capacity. This prioritizes registration to students who wish to attend the entire series. Drop-in purchases will be allowed after week #1, if space allows. Thank you for your kind understanding as we tweak our policies in order to support our financial sustainability during these challenging times.
