Flamenco for Absolute Beginners

Curious about flamenco but never tried it before? This welcoming, beginner-friendly workshop is the perfect introduction to the vibrant world of flamenco dance. In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of flamenco compas (rhythmic structure), palmas (rhythmic clapping) to help you feel and internalize the beat, and then move into basic footwork technique to begin developing the percussive sounds that are central to flamenco. You’ll also explore the expressive arm and hand movements which flamenco is known for. By the end of the workshop, you’ll combine these elements into a short sequence that gives you a taste of authentic flamenco movement and rhythm. Hard-soled shoes with a sturdy heel are best.

Intro to Balboa

Balboa is a vintage partner dance developed in Southern California. At the same time that Lindy Hop was developing in the ballrooms of Harlem in the 1920s and 30s, teens at the Rendezvous Ballroom at Newport Beach, CA were developing a swing dance characterized by chest to chest connection, fancy footwork, and elegant spins and turns. In the modern swing dance scene Balboa is one of the most relaxed ways to dance to fast music and has a community of dancers in most major cities in the world.

In this workshop you will learn the basic steps of Balboa, as well as connection and technique tips to make it feel easy and fun. Appropriate for brand new dancers and will include plenty of fundamentals and feedback for more experienced dancers. Smooth-soled shoes are best.

Individual dancers are welcome to register as we will rotate partners throughout the workshop.

The Fine Print

We need to have a minimum number of students enrolled in any particular class in order for it to continue beyond the first meeting. If minimum enrollment in the full series has not been met before the second class, the class will be removed from the schedule.

Due to space restrictions, single class purchases will not be allowed the first week for in-person classes that usually fill to capacity. This prioritizes registration to students who wish to attend the entire series. Drop-in purchases will be allowed after week #1, if space allows. Thank you for your kind understanding as we tweak our policies in order to support our financial sustainability during these challenging times.

For attire, please see our FAQ on the About page.

Make-ups for missed classes may be taken during the same session but may not be carried over to the next session.
